CPU Usage: 99%. PSSR 2.0

Crimson Desert’s CPU Wall: Even the PS5 Pro Can’t Outrun Zen 2

I finally got my hands on Crimson Desert for the PS5 Pro today, and the results are a wake-up call for console gamers. While the game looks breathtaking thanks to the day-one PSSR 2.0 update, “Performance Mode” is struggling to live up to its name in the streets of Pywel.

Performance Analysis:

  • The Issue: Significant frame rate dips into the 30s and 40s while traversing dense cities or engaging in large-scale sieges.
  • The Cause: This isn’t a GPU problem. On the Pro, the GPU has more than enough power to render the 1080p base resolution. We are hitting a CPU bottleneck. The PS5 Pro’s Zen 2 CPU—while capable—is being pushed to its absolute limit by the game’s NPC density and world simulation.
  • The PSSR Factor: PSSR 2.0 is doing “magic” with image clarity, making the performance mode look indistinguishable from 4K in many scenes, but AI upscaling can’t fix a struggling CPU.

“Beauty in the Chaos”

The Visual Triumph: Despite the CPU-heavy heavy lifting in the cities, we have to give credit where it’s due: Crimson Desert is easily one of the most visually stunning games of this generation. Whether you are on a PS5 Pro or a Base PS5, the “BlackSpace” engine delivers lighting and particle effects that feel truly “next-gen.”

Performance on the Base PS5: If you haven’t upgraded to a Pro yet, don’t let the technical talk scare you off. The Base PS5 version holds up remarkably well. While it lacks the PSSR 2.0 “shimmer-free” clarity, the art direction carries the experience. The textures are dense, the weather effects are transformative, and the combat remains snappy and responsive.

The Verdict: Don’t let a few frame dips in the city stop you from experiencing this world. The gameplay loop is addictive, the world-building is top-tier, and most importantly—it’s just fun. If you can handle a bit of “soul” in your frame rate during the busiest city segments, you are in for one of the best action-RPG experiences of 2026. This is a day-one buy for any fan of the genre.
